GeoTech Ohio
At GeoTech Ohio you will learn how GPS and GIS technologies can bring the world into your classroom. This week-long institute will focus on the use of GPS and GIS technologies in educational settings. It is sponsored by Ashland University College of Education, New Albany-Plain Local School District, and conducted in cooperation with the United States Geological Survey.
Instructors will be Dr. Joseph Kerski, Education Outreach Geographer at the USGS in Denver, Dr. Herb Broda, Ashland University, and Josh Flory, New Albany Middle School.
The institute fee is $285 and includes five days of instruction, most meals, and a copy of Mapping Our World (including a one-year site license for software.
Graduate credit is available from Ashland University Professional Development Services for an additional $446.

The Minnesota DNR Division of Forestry has adopted the national
Firewise Communities program, designed to help communities assess and
reduce the risk of wildfire to homes. In collaboration with the DNR, the
Minnesota Alliance for Geographic Education (MAGE) has developed a standards-based Firewise Communities curriculum and trains teachers to implement this curriculum. Three trainings will be offered in 2005, each for 12 teachers. Training sessions include content instruction on wildfire, Firewise and the Urban/Wildland Interface, and hands-on technology training in GPS and GIS. Teachers will be prepared to lead Social Studies, Science, Service Learning or Youth Group students in conducting a Firewise Communities project in their own community.
If needed, the Minnesota Firewise Program will provide laptop computers, software, and GPS receivers for Minnesota participants.

Developing
Cartographic Literacy with Historic Maps
The Newberry Library invites school teachers nationwide to apply for its 2005 NEH summer seminar, "Developing Cartographic Literacy with Historic Maps." Successful applicants will receive a stipend of $2,400 to help defray travel and housing expenses. This three-week seminar led by Jim Akerman (The Newberry Library) and Jerry Danzer (Emeritus, The University of Illinois at Chicago) is designed to develop cartographic literacy and to encourage effective map use in the classroom. University of Oregon
Preparing Teachers for Advanced Placement Human Geography
June 1 is the deadline for applications for an interactive online course designed to prepare teachers to teach AP Human Geography. The course, offered by NGCE with funding from the National Geographic Society Education Foundation, begins with a workshop in Portland, Oregon July 14-17, 2005, followed by an online course during the fall semester.
The summer workshop and the course will be developed and led by Dr. Susan Hardwick, Department of Geography, University of Oregon and past president of NCGE. Participants who complete the workshop and the course will receive a $100 stipend.
The project will provide course materials, lodging and meals at the summer university session at no cost. The University of
Oregon will offer the four credit course at both undergraduate and graduate levels for a total cost of $220. Applicants
must seek other support for transportation, from school districts or geographic alliances. Application materials are online at

This workshop will cover the key topics of AP Human Geography: the nature and perspective of geography, population, cultural geography, agriculture and rural land use, industrial and economic development, political geography and urbanization. During the workshop participants will be expected to evaluate teaching materials and engage in discussions and activities related to the key topics. Participants will be required to submit a final project, such as a lesson plan around a key topic, or a course outline, or 20 multiple choice questions and 3 free response questions. Some teaching materials from a variety of publishers will be provided. Participants are encouraged to bring texts and other materials they use to teach human geography.
