2009 National Conference on Geography Education San Juan, Puerto Rico
September 23-27, 2009
"Crossroads of Cultures"
In the week of September 21, 2009, we found Puerto Rico continuing to serve its role as a Crossroads of Cultures. The National Conference on Geography Education presented an opportunity for the island and its people to welcome to this crossroads yet another group of travelers. As a crossroad, the Island of Boriken is noted to have been home to the Taino Indians, a stopping place for Christopher Columbus in 1493, Juan Ponce de Leon in 1508, and for the ensuing 501 years has been where Europe, Africa and North America have merged to form a unique and wonderful place. This week the island and its people hosted geography teachers and guests from more than 30 states, South Korea, Ireland/Norway, Germany, Canada, and other countries. We all discovered that a visit to Puerto Rico was a masterful educational immersion into human and physical geography, and much more. We were greeted by the people as distant travelers in need of a warm welcome and its charming hospitality. We received both. It is the Puerto Rico we discovered through our five senses, the soles of our shoes and our cameras. We enjoyed a successful conference program this year, the island, and the people.
